Halloween Ghost High/Low Kindergarten Pitch Activity
Mr. Spooky
Holidays are are great way to bring variety and engagement to your music class. I never expected a wad of plastic bags, a white kitchen towel, and the end of a broom handle could be so entertaining to a group of kindergarten students! (I even had a kindergartener who has not participated in 9 weeks help me out!) This was a very successful and engaging Halloween high low activity!
(You will have to forgive Mr. Spooky’s appearance. He was haphazardly designed on the way out the door this morning and didn’t have time to properly put himself together. He will undergo some cosmetic changes for next year!)
For this kindergarten activity, we explored high vs low pitch. When Mr. Spooky was high in the air, his “oooooo” was high. As he moved lower, his “ooooooo’s” got lower, too. He made loopy loops, rode a slide, bungee jumped… He had a grand old time in class today! During the month of October, each student will have the opportunity to make Mr. Spooky sing!
My students needed some support for the first few students, but they got the idea pretty quickly.
Mr. Spooky 1.0 is made with a bag of plastic grocery bags wadded up inside of another grocery bag. I used a section of my adjustable length broom handle as the stick to hold him.. Then he is covered with a white flour sack towel with construction paper eyes taped on. (Disclaimer – this is my son in the picture.)
For the next day’s activity, we used sucker ghosts (suckers wrapped with a tissue, tied with a string) and pipe cleaners to make our ghosts sing!
Each student received a ghost and pipe cleaner. They made their own high/low “songs” by bending their pipe cleaner to show the shape of their melody. Students then took turns at the front of the room (or in small groups) directing the rest of the students in singing their high/low “oooo’s”. As an added treat, the students got to take a sucker home!
